National Black Girl Day of Rest | Milk and Melt's Monday 3/10

Girlfriend, let’s talk about something we don’t do enough... resting. Not just sitting down for five minutes before jumping back up to handle something else, but true, intentional, restorative rest.

Today, on National Black Girl Day of Rest, we’re claiming our "relax"... The right to slow down, breathe, and exist without constantly doing. This isn’t just about lounging around (although that’s definitely on the menu). It’s about breaking the cycle of exhaustion that so many of us have been conditioned to believe is normal.

Because rest is self-care. Rest is resistance. Rest is a birthright.

Why Black Women Need Rest... For Real

We hold down our families, show up for our friends, go hard in our careers, and somehow still make time for everybody but ourselves. We’ve been taught that being “strong” means never stopping. But at what cost?

The truth is, constantly running on empty isn’t strength.. it’s survival mode. And we deserve more than that. We deserve to live, to thrive, and to feel at peace. Rest isn’t lazy. It’s necessary.

When we give ourselves permission to rest, we allow our bodies and minds to reset, heal, and realign. Stress decreases, our creativity flows, and we show up better for ourselves and those we love.

Signs You Need to Prioritize Rest!

  • You’re always tired, even after a full night’s sleep.
  • You feel guilty when you’re not being “productive.”
  • You’ve been feeling irritable, anxious, or mentally drained.
  • Your body is giving you signals, i.e headaches, muscle tension, or fatigue.
  • You can’t remember the last time you truly unplugged.

If any of these sound like you, then it’s time.

Rest is More Than Sleep!

The Seven Types of Rest You Need

Rest isn’t just about catching up on sleep (though that’s important too). There are actually seven types of rest that we all need to be truly replenished:

1. Physical Rest – Get your sleep, take naps, and let your body relax without guilt.
2. Mental Rest – Take breaks from overthinking and worrying. A quiet mind is a rested mind.
3. Emotional Rest – Stop carrying everyone else’s burdens and allow yourself to feel.
4. Social Rest – Distance yourself from draining people. Not everyone deserves your energy.
5. Creative Rest – Step away from always "producing" and let your inspiration flow naturally.
6. Sensory Rest – Unplug from screens, social media, and all that background noise.
7. Spiritual Rest – Connect with your higher self, pray, meditate, or just be still.

Today is the perfect day to ask yourself, which type of rest have I been neglecting?

How to Honor National Black Girl Day of Rest

Whether you have the whole day off or just a few stolen moments, you can reclaim your rest in ways that feel good to you. Here are some ideas

  • Do absolutely nothing and don’t feel guilty about it.
  • Unplug from the world put your phone on Do Not Disturb and enjoy the quiet.
  • Take a luxurious nap, the kind where you wake up and don’t know what year it is, Lmao
  • Create a soothing space, light candles, put on soft music, and just chill.
  • Say “no” today, to work, to stress, to anything that drains you.
  • Indulge in something soft and slow, read, meditate, do a gentle stretch.
  • Pamper yourself, a long bath, body butter, a fresh mani-pedi, or just lounging in a robe all day.

The goal is to give yourself exactly what you need. No over-explaining. No justifying. Just rest.

Rest Like Your Life Depends on It... Because It Does

Girlfriend, this is your reminder that you don’t have to earn your rest. You don’t have to finish one more task, help one more person, or justify why you need a break. You are worthy of rest simply because you exist.

So today, let’s break the cycle. Let’s reject the burnout culture. Let’s choose ease, softness, and rest unapologetically.
